For it has been said so truthfully that it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives that protester the freedom to abuse and burn that flag. They protected us on the field of battle. They watch over our eternal rest. We are grateful. As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave. So on this day, let us remember and honor those who will be serving, those who are currently serving, and to those who have lost their lives serving to protect the freedom of the United States.
